Charity boxing night a great success

Full house at QEYC for fight night.

Gunnar Jackson is a man on a mission.

The 32-year-old not only wants to unify the New Zealand Middleweight division by winning all the tiles available but also to set new standards in organising safe corporate boxing events.

Gunnar made a great start on both counts at a sold out Queen Elizabeth Youth Centre on Saturday night.

The event raised $15,000 for Waipuna Hospice, a charity close to Gunnar's heart.

He defeated Blake Bell by unanimous decision over 10 rounds to win the vacant Pro Box NZ Middleweight and NZPBA Central titles.

It was his 28th victory in 44 professional bouts.

'I definitely picked my game up big time to secure those two belts. From round one to round 10 my fitness was good. I came out strong and finished strong.

'Next year my goal is to unify all the Middleweight belts before I hang the gloves up. There are another three main New Zealand titles to get as there are four associations in New Zealand now.”

Gunnar and his business partner at Mount Maunganui's Bay Box Fit, Leo Ryan, were delighted the 15 corporate bouts in the Battle of the Trades event went off without a hitch on Saturday night.

Gunnar says the extra safety precautions they introduced of compulsory headgear and 18 ounce gloves with extra padding for the 100kg-plus fighters paid immediate dividends.

NZPBA attended a sparring session on the week prior to the event, to assess the boxers' competency levels.

'Many of the competitors are continuing to train with us after the show. The event and training regime have been extremely beneficial to them. The benefits of what we teach them last long after that bell rings - its lifetime stuff,” Gunnar says.

'Our key points were that they got out of there safely. They all fought pretty well and the event was pretty good. We wanted to raise money for a good cause and run a good show and we did that. That was our main objective.”
