From pavements, to pedals and then pools, hundreds of children in the Bay of Plenty are taking on one of the most renowned childrens' triathlons this weekend.

The day isn't so much about winning, but more, giving it your best shot – and so it's aptly named the Sanitarium Weet-Bix Kids TRYathlon.

The event takes place this Sunday and will see children swimming, cycling and running their way to the finish line to receive a medal from special sporting stars.

Since the very first event in 1992, which boasted just 800 entrants, more than 300,000 Kiwi kids have given it a TRY.

The increase in children, aged seven to 15, enrolling for the iconic sporting event continues the trend of the TRYathlon's growing popularity with demand driving this year's entries to sell 85 percent faster than previous years.

Road closures will be in place during the TRYathlon.

A statement on the Tauranga City Council website says from 5am to 2pm on Sunday November 25, the following lane closures will be in place:

Gloucester Road. South bound lane only – from Monowai Street to Hibiscus Avenue.

Grenada Street. North bound lane only – from Hibiscus Avenue to Monowai Street.

Hibiscus Avenue. East Bound Lane only – from Gloucester Road to Grenada Street.

This year's Mt Maunganui Weet-Bix Kids TRYathlon is located at Arataki Park. The TRYathlon will begin with the swim leg in the indoor pool at Baywave. The bike leg is around the streets surrounding Arataki Park and the leg run is around Arataki Park itself.

The TRYathlon starts at 9am.
