The Bay Oval and adjacent Blake Park, was alive to plenty of shrieks of laughter and encouragement on a beautiful Western Bay Wednesday November 7 2018, as 36 Year five and six school cricket teams took part in the Western Bay of Plenty Mini World Cup.
The 15th staging of the Western Bay of Plenty Mini World Cup, brought together town and country schools, who were united in their enjoyment of playing cricket.
A major attraction at the Mini World Cup, is that the teams represent an ICC cricket nation, with many of the schools dressing up in the colours of the country that they represented on the day.
Eight-aside teams from Pongakawa in the south to Pahioa School close to the Western Bay northern border - were taking part in one of the four BOPCA regional cricket festivals, held throughout the Bay of Plenty in November 2018.
Participants put into practise, the skills learnt at the NZ Cricket Superstarter program school visits during August and September.
The coveted prizes of the best countries uniform was awarded to Nepal (Maketu School) and Qatar (Papamoa Primary one), who both showed great originality in their team uniforms.
Te Puna School one (Kenya) and Maungatapu School (Fiji), were adjudged the most improved teams on the day, with near neighbours Oropi and Pyes Pa Schools taking home the sportsmanship awards.
