Tauranga Labour list MP Jan Tinetti's Education Amendment Bill passed its third reading in Parliament.

The Bill requires the Minister of Education to consult when setting the statement of National Education and Learning Priorities, which outlines high level education priorities to guide planning for early childhood and compulsory education sectors.

'This Bill gives priority to voices of those immersed in our education system. It's about focusing on and valuing the voice of our kids and expertise of our teachers,” says Jan.

'I see this Bill as an opportunity to build trust with the sector. By ensuring their voices are heard, our school teachers, principals and whanau will be involved in setting the direction of New Zealand's education system.”

'This Bill is an example of how this Government is striving to be inclusive, to include a wide range voices in policy making, not just the voices of a select few.”

The Bill passed with support from Labour, NZ First, and the Green Party. It will come into force on the day after it receives the Royal Assent.
