A child has been rescued from a potential drowning at an Eastern Bay of Plenty beach.

A police media spokesperson says emergency services were called to a beach near Matata at about 7.45am following reports a two-year-old was face down in water.

'The child was pulled from the water and is receiving medical treatment.”

SunLive understands the child has been taken to hospital in a moderate condition.
