New Zealand police has answered questions from potential recruits in its latest recruitment video, ‘Breaking News'.

The video, which has just gone live on the New Zealand police Facebook page, is a fast-paced clip with quick-fire questions and answers in a news report style.

Similar to last year's hugely successful ‘World's Most Entertaining Police Recruitment Video', the stars of the ‘Breaking News' video are portrayed by real New Zealand Police officers.

There are some special guest appearances too including Wellington Paranormal's Minogue and O'Leary, Oscar Kightley and comedian David Correos.

'A common thing we hear from people considering joining police is that they have a lot of questions and they want to put these to some of our staff,” says police Commissioner Mike Bush.

'The ‘Breaking News' video features our officers answering the questions people most commonly ask of us before joining up, but in a fun, creative and accessible way.

'Our organisation aspires for New Zealand to be the world's safest country and the Government has invested significantly to help us do this by growing our overall staff numbers.

'We want to better reflect the communities we serve and this means attracting new staff from all backgrounds, but we particularly need more women, Māori, Pacific Islanders and Asians.

'We also need people who are keen to work in Tāmaki Makaurau.

'This innovative campaign sets out to ensure any question a potential future cop has is answered, and we're confident that will mean more people sign up to join our fantastic organisation,” says the Commissioner.

Kaye Ryan, Deputy Chief Executive: People and Capability, says there is a common misconception about what type of person police want to recruit as officers.

'We hope this video will dispel some of the myths and show people that we want to recruit New Zealanders with a variety of backgrounds.

'There are more than 30 different career paths as an officer in the New Zealand police and we invest time in training our staff so they have the skills to face any situation.”

As well as the video, Police have also today launched the web platform ‘ChatCops' found on the newcops.co.nz website.

‘ChatCops' features around 70 videos with a variety of our staff talking about who they are, their role at NZ Police, what it takes to be a cop, what training involves and so much more.

Members of the public will be able to ask further questions of these ‘ChatCops' in the coming months via email and live chat sessions.

More than 60 staff feature in the video and another 100 officers around Aotearoa are involved in the ‘ChatCops' web platform.

'Getting staff involved in the video and ‘ChatCops' was easy because they're passionate about showing New Zealanders why this is such a great job,” says Acting Deputy Chief Executive Public Affairs Jane Archibald.

'Policing is an exciting and dynamic career suited to many types of Kiwis — who better to tell you that than the staff who are doing it daily.”

‘Breaking News' has been made with advertising agency Ogilvy, and the video was directed by New Zealander Damien Shatford, who also directed last year's recruitment video.
