Arson is the suspected cause of two cars being set alight near an Eastern Bay of Plenty pack house.

EastPack Edgecumbe workers arrived to the site one morning to discover work vehicles completely burnt out.

Manager Calum Spankie says believes the incident happened overnight on Monday.

'One car was stolen and two others were set alight. It looked like they had been set alight by petrol.”

He says the vehicles involved are part of a company fleet.

'A tanker driver going past at the time called the fire brigade pretty close to them being set alight, but there's not a lot left.”

He says police are investigating.

A police media spokesperson says police attended the job at about 1.50am on Monday.

'We received a report that two cars had been set alight on East Bank Road, near McLean Road and Awakeri Road. Fire services also attended.

'Enquires are ongoing.”

People with information about what happened can either contact their nearest police station, or they can call Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
