SH2 crosses ‘bowled over’

The cross farm that once stood tall. Photos: Nikki South.

White crosses are placed along State Highway 2, just along from Quarry Road, have been knocked over.

A caller to the 0800 SUNLIVE news hotline on Thursday morning says it looked like the signs had been knocked over onto the ground.

Andrew Hollis from Fix the Bloody Road says that they had someone go out and have a look at the signs and the crosses don't seem to be badly damaged.

'It looks like someone has bowled them over, we banged some posts and then attached the crosses to the posts, and all the posts have been broken.”

'So we have a working bee on Saturday so we will go and reinstate it. There is no damage to the crosses or the signs so we can just utilise them.”

Andrew still doesn't know who vandalised the site but say they crosses gave the Fix the Bloody Road Group attention when they were first put in place and now quite possibly could get more attention again when the public see them putting the crosses back up on Saturday.

Don't Bother!

They are a distraction for drivers that already struggle to focus on the road ahead. Put them up somewhere else if you must but not just prior to known accident black spot!!

they scream fix the road then put these ugly things up on a cnr to distract drivers

It is not so much the roads that need fixing.....

It's the drivers... hopefully whoever knocked the crosses over will take them away next time. I can understand someone who has lost a loved one to leave a small marker in their memory.... but a 'farm' of giant white crosses is completely pointless and as others have said, a distraction.

Maintenance...

it could have easily have been the mowing contractors who are required to keep the vegetation down? Speed and distraction are 2 major contributing factors to a lot of these accidents, yes agreed, the road has been the same for too long. Not sure if that's the best location for all these white crosses though?

What rubbish....

To "Thoughts" - those saying the crosses are a distraction - what rubbish. They are there to make people think hard. I've driven past multiple times and they don't distract me... the just remind me of the dangers on that stretch of road. To "Jaybe" - doesn't look like contractors did it, cos the grass hasn't even been mowed. To those who did it........ grow up.

Fix the Drivers

I couldn't agree more with the previous comments. It isn't so much the roads, but the 'distracted, impatient' DRIVERS. Yes, the road needs widening, to cope with the extra traffic flow. However, the accidents occur due to the 'dum drivers'. Distractions, CELL phones, applying makeup, drinking coffee, eating breakfast. What next. Teach the drivers some better skills. STOP being so impatient, & AGGRESSIVE. Leave earlier for work, Think about how you are driving. One of the last accidents was from out of town, deliberately swerving over the road, & eventually killing himself. After many reports to the POLICE. YOu can't blame the road for that behaviour. So, the drivers need to be fixed, NOT the roads.

You aren't distracted because you know why they are there. The many out of towners & tourist that visit our area don't know the meaning & aren't familiar with the road. Anything that takes your attention off the road is a bad idea. "A moments distraction" is often cited when taliking about accidents. You are one of the many in denial about the real causes off the issues with this road. Probably one of the many that pull out of Omokoroa in the morning onto the highway without observing the compulsary stop sign. Ironic how many have a "fix the bloody road" sticker on the back of their car!

Drive training!

So utterly ridiculous to blame a road for accidents. Instead of wasting money on the road, lets encourage our lazy governments to properly train new drivers, so eventually we will have skilled drivers on our roads. Driving is not a born right, it requires skill, concentration and responsibility. Pete
