Local Labour MPs, Angie Warren-Clark, Jan Tinetti and Tamati Coffey are inviting tenants, landlords and whānau to have their say on the Coalition Government's proposed changes to the Residential Tenancies Act by hosting a public meeting.

Aimed at making renting fairer for all, the proposed changes look at cracking down on cowboy landlords, and balancing the interests of respectful landlords with the rights of tenants.

'New Zealand is in the middle of a housing crisis that requires addressing on several fronts. One of the most significant of these is making life better for renters,” says Angie.

'Renting has become a long-term reality for many New Zealanders but our laws have not kept pace. This reform of the Residential Tenancies Act will ensure the rights of renters to a secure, healthy and decent place to call home.”

With the range of proposals open for public consultation including justifiable reasons for ending a tenancy, limiting annual rent increases, notice periods and pets, Mr Coffey, Ms Tinetti and Ms Warren-Clark say the meeting is a strong sign of the Government's commitment to inclusiveness and hearing the perspectives of everyday New Zealanders.

'Over one third of New Zealanders rent. As I travel around the Waiariki, it is obvious that that percentage jumps significantly for Māori,” says Tamati Coffey.

'This hui is an exciting opportunity for our community to be part of overhauling Aotearoa's outdated tenancy laws. To help fairly give our rangatahi security and stability, and to back our whānau in putting down roots, growing our communities and making a house a home.”
