One of Aotearoa's foremost soul and R&B singers, Aaradhna, is embarking on a six-date tour, giving New Zealand fans one last chance to see her live before she takes time out to write and record new music.
The Auckland singer and songwriter will perform at Cabana in Napier on September 28; Boiler Room in Whakatane on September 29; Totara Street in Mount Maunganui on October 5; Neck of the Woods in Auckland on October 11; Club Tavern in Christchurch on October 12 and San Fran in Wellington in October 13.
SunLive caught up with the Aardhna ahead of the tour's first show, which kicks off tonight.
She says her tour is made up of herself, along with her entourage, her new six-piece band who will perform together with her for the first time. They're not just her team, but her family.
'We will be playing a bunch of my old tunes and latest ones before I take some time out to finish off writing my new album.
'For us it's about enjoying each other's company and bringing a soulful night to the fans. We will be bringing something that I haven't had in the past and these shows together with my soulful team and family are not to be missed.”
She says while all of the venues in the tour each have their own special qualities, Tauranga is one that holds a special place in her heart.
'We last performed there two years ago for One Love. The atmosphere and vibes have always been amazing and we cannot wait to perform there.
'I tend to see quite a vocal and soulful crowd in Tauranga, which loves to express their inner voice. The reactions I see makes me feel warm and humbled.
'These fans are usually very loyal, humble and come from all different walks of life which always seems to surprise me. It brings a smile to my face when I get to hear some of their stories and how my music touches them and their lives.”
The Winter's End Tour is Aaradhna's most extensive tour of New Zealand in recent years; marking the end of an era and the start of the next chapter in her remarkable journey.
And while she's firmly established herself as an internationally recognised artist, she says touring her own back yard is where her heart is most happy.
'New Zealand is home, this is my roots my upbringing and my culture. I feel visiting these cities around the country always brings me down to earth because it is away from all the hustle and bustle in some international shows.”
When asked what her favourite song to perform is, the singer-song writers says she's undecided.
'I don't have a favourite because this is my form of expression and art throughout my life. It's hard to pick just one song in particular, fans have their favourites, but for me as all of my songs touch me in some way or another.”
Aardhna says her music has evolved over the years in the sense she now has more freedom to express herself.
'I get to express everything inside that I experience from day to day life.”
And would she go back in time to change anything? 'I don't think I would,” she says.
'We all live and learn as each day, month and year goes by and as some say, we grow wiser throughout the journey.”
Despite a long list of beaming achievements the artist says her part in helping to create a new category at the Vodafone New Zealand Music Awards is above all, her proudest achievement.
The change comes following her refusal to accept a Tui award naming the singer's album ‘Brown Girl' as winner of the Best Urban and Hip Hop album at the 2016 VNZMA ceremony.
During a brief and direct speech on the night, she refused the award saying she had been 'placed in the category of brown people” and wanted to be rightly recognised as an R&B singer.
Following the event VNZMA agreed upon creating another category for soul and R&B artists.
'I think it had been 51 years of being put into one category and now that's changed. I'm glad more and more artists' music from around New Zealand will be recognised.”
For the most part the singer is tight-lipped about what's to expect from her new music, but she does say fans should trust they will be in for something special.
'I wish I could say more but at this stage it is still very early. Let's just say I have been listening to a lot of different genres of music, new & old and looking forward to saying more once it's completed.
'I have had the blessing of travelling as of late and had time to soak in all of these different cultures, music and wave lengths.
'From the end of this tour, it is about me locking myself away in my studio and writing.”
