A person has died following a house fire in the Bay of Plenty.

Four fire crews were called to the blaze in Opotiki around 10pm on Thursday.

Fire and Emergency New Zealand shift manager Scott Osmond says the fire was at a single storey house.

He says someone was found dead in the fire.

No other people were reported to be injured and the cause of the blaze is still under investigation.

Two fire safety investigators are at the scene and Scott says one unit remains at the scene on standby in case there are any flare-ups.
