Shelter belt fire put out

Update 1pm - A shelter belt fire near Te Puna is now under control.

Fire and Emergency New Zealand Northern Communications Shift manager Scott Osmond says the fire has happened on Newnham Road.

'This fire is about 75m long, the undergrowth of the shelter belt is on fire.

'Fire crews at the scene have managed to cut off the spread of the fire.

'The Greerton Tanker is about to arrive at the scene with more water so we can clean up.”

Reports are coming in about a shelter belt fire near Te Puna.

A caller to the 0800 SUNLIVE news hotline says the fire is on Newnham Road.

"Fire has been called and is on the way."
