A Western Bay of Plenty family has lost close to everything after their home was engulfed in flames yesterday afternoon.

Emergency services were called to the private address on Arawa Road, in Pongakawa, around 4.45pm to find the single story dwelling alight.

Northern fire communications shift manager Scott Osmond says one household was involved in the fire.

'About half an hour later the main body of the fire was knocked down.”

'A fire investigator was requested to attend.”

Su Mars, who lives on Arawa Road, is calling on people to donate items to replace what was lost in the house fire.

'Donations are wanted. Our lovely young neighbour's house has gone up in flames.”

'They are all ok, but lost nearly everything due to fire and smoke damage.”

Su says the couple has two little ones – a baby girl about four-months-old and a two-year-old boy.

'If you have any baby clothes, toys, kitchenware, furniture etc you could donate please take them to Think Water in Te Puke, who will pass them on.”

Habitat Humanity Bay of Plenty operations manager Lisa Pomare has also offered to help out the young family.

'We just want to reach out and give them what they need,” says Lisa.

'We'll load up a truck of stuff to take over. We're not just about putting people in houses, we also want to support people through this type of thing.”

'We have clothes and toys and we just want to get them back on their feet.”

A GiveaLittle page has been set up for the family with more than $2000 already being donated.

If you wish to donate you can do so here.

Sorry for your loss, but........

Surely your insurance company will pay for your losses, assuming you have cover that is. Too many people are relying on 'GiveaLittle' - this is not some sort of new insurance policy. Think I might cancel all my insurances and rely on the generosity of the people in the Bay. Pleased no one was hurt (including the dog) in this event all the same.
