Spring clean at Pilot Bay

Relics from the 1980's were found during a Pilot Bay clean up on Sunday September 9.

Envirohub's Pilot Bay Spring Clean on Sunday for Sustainable Backyards Bitesize was a huge success with over 30 people coming out to collect a wheelie bin full of rubbish.

The 1980's relics were found when scout members dug up loads of rubbish that had been buried into the side of the Mount.

Envirohub's project manager Liesel Carnie says a large number of cigarette butts were found too especially surrounding the car park areas.

'It's fantastic to see all of this rubbish leave the natural environment to ensure it didn't damage any of our precious marine and birdlife or leach toxic chemicals into the ocean.”

'Paul from Western Bay Wildlife Trust was a huge contributor bringing the buckets and gloves and his wicked sense of humour as always.”

James Richardson, Anae Garret and Bubbles all aged 10, helping out at the spring clean.

Nigel Blakeborough says his son Michael Blakeborough and his friend Daniel Evans picked up 3 buckets each at the clean-up.

'If we didn't have to be somewhere else, they could have picked up a further 10 buckets each especially around the rock area to the right of the boat ramp.”

The boys who belong to the Greerton Scout Group were helping with the clean-up and their contribution to the clean-up will go towards them getting their Conservation Scout Badge.

'The boys were not looking forward to it,” says Nigel. 'But while they were collecting all the rubbish, they kept saying they were really enjoying it and they couldn't believe just how much litter there was!”
