The township of Katikati is turning back the clock 125 years to remember the suffragettes in 1918.

A day of events is taking place on Saturday September 15, starting with a march from the Uretara Domain and ending at the War Memorial Hall.

On Monday September 3, women in Katikati dressed up in Victorian style, created banners and chained themselves to poles outside the War Memorial Hall in order to raise awareness of the march and the day's event.

'On September 15, you'll have the march starting from the Uretara Domain at 12pm then we will make our way to the War Memorial Hall. When you get to the hall there will be displays of things showing what life would have been like in the 1880s,” says event organiser Nikki Austin.

'Displays like what they would have done for entertainment, so playing musical instruments. What they would have done with art back then, and what they would have done for housework.”

'People will then make their way into the hall with a range a costumes on display.”

Guest of honour Helen Clark will be speaking at 1pm followed by a theatre performance.

‘A women's place' will showcase what it was like in the 1880s and what it would have been like at one of the suffragette meetings.

The day's events on September 15 will be free to the public.

The Western Bay Museum is also getting on board to celebrate the 125 year mark by allowing free admission on September 15.

'They currently have an expedition about the profiles of women who were really important in the suffrage movement around that time who lived in the Bay, and their stories are absolutely fascinating.”

'I had no idea about the things that they went through to register to vote and then to vote because there were no cars, no roads, they had to bike or come on horseback and leave their babies behind. It really adds to the gravity of it all when you read their stories.”
