A police operation has blocked off a Tauranga road.

A caller to the 0800 SUNLIVE news hotline says there are armed police on the corner of Waihi and Paine roads.

"The road is getting blocked off and police are not allowing people down the street."

Police say this is in relation to an ongoing operation.

"Police had a warrant to arrest," says a media spokesperson.

"One person is now in custody thanks to the help of the AOS team."

People are being asked to avoid the scene if possible, until further notice.
