Bay of Plenty Regional Council is boasting an international accolade.
The organisation has just won the 2018 Australasian Management Challenge, which was announced at the LG Professionals Australia National Congress 2018 held in Canberra, Australia on Thursday 23 August.
The Australasian Management Challenge provides real-life problem-solving experiences for local government professionals, as well as opportunities to develop leadership, communication and analytical skills.
Teams must tackle a quick succession of real life scenarios based on the kinds of management challenges that may arise day-to-day in the local government environment.
Bay of Plenty Regional Council claimed the title as winner of the New Zealand leg of the challenge in February earlier this year when it competed against 14 other councils from around New Zealand.
Following on from its win in February, Bay of Plenty Regional Council represented New Zealand in Canberra, competing against seven teams from Australia.
Bay of Plenty Regional Council chief executive Fiona McTavish says it's a fantastic win.
'We are elated to have won. This team is not only a reflection of the talent we have within our organisation but also the immense talent in this region.
'The challenge aims to test a team's ability to understand the complexities of their communities and environment, then demonstrate how to serve them in innovative and meaningful ways.
'Winning this competition shows we are leading the way in this, not only in New Zealand but Australasia.”
Lead Facilitators of the 2018 Australian Management Challenge, Jim Myhill and Jane Trotter, say the competition was of a high calibre.
'The teams that competed in the Final of the Australasian Management Challenge in Canberra were the eight regional Challenge winners.
'These teams were the best of the best, so we expected a high standard. Even against such high-calibre competition the Bay of Plenty team shone through. They displayed outstanding professionalism, problem-solving, attention to detail and teamwork - they were very worthy winners."
Bay of Plenty Regional Council also won the best ‘Risk Task' award. This task was a component of the Management Challenge and was developed and judged by the Principal Partner of the National Congress and Management Challenge - JLT.

No wonder the Regional Rate is so high, 10 staff , off to Australia for a game or "challenge ". let alone all the time spent practicing and "winning" the local competitions.
Negativity Consumes Our Society!

"Letters to the Editor" is a great tool for freedom of expression. ... However, does responsibility not come hand-in-hand with that freedom?... I do note that 'CC8' in this stream makes assertions which may only be assumptions since there is nothing that links his/her thoughts. ... I do, however, see this reactionary negativity as a societal trend... It seems that in some instances, (Facebook would be a prime example) people become used to vocalising without thought and without any respect for the citizens who make up the rest of their society... I think there is probably a strong chance that societal values will be further weakened by this action and trend... When that happens, I am sure we will all be far worse off! Bill Gibson-Patmore.
Really? Disappointed
