One of the 'hairiest” members of the Pongakawa School teaching staff will be saying goodbye to his locks.

Joseph Thomas is sacrificing his hair and beard on Monday, as he raises money and awareness for the work of CanTeen.

Joseph says this is something he has been planning for some time.

'There are a lot of us who have seen or experienced cancer and its extreme effects on people's lives. Giving up my long locks and rasining awareness within our school is just a small part in helping CanTeen assist our youth in a time of great need.”

Joseph also intends to donate his long locks to be used in wigs created for those who lose their hair whilst undergoing chemotherapy.

'Joe's commitment to raise funds for CanTeen is something the school's student leadership team have been happy to embrace. A number of local families are affected by cancer currently and for some it is an extremely challenging and emotional time right now,” says Deputy Principal Mike Judd.

'The school will be getting behind the initiative with a school wide Crazy Hair Day giving all students the opportunity to get creative. There will also be a sausage sizzle on the day thanks to Pak N Save Papamoa who are long-time supporters of CanTeen.”

Mr T has already raised $1452.67.
