Wet weather, and some major blowouts, ruled in rugby's Battle of the Kaimais and Pro 4 contests on Saturday.
Waikato's top four women's club teams convincingly took out the inaugural Battle of the Kaimais over their Bay of Plenty counterparts at a soaked and slippery Tauranga Domain.
Only Whakarewarewa were able to get the job done for the Bay, taking their encounter with Southern United 49 – 5. It was a positive start to the day for the home supporters, but from then on there was little to celebrate.
Waikite were distinctly second best against University, taking an 86-0 thrashing, while last week's beaten Baywide finalists Rangiuru had a more closely-fought battle with Hamilton Old Boys before going down 29-12.
For the Bay's champion side Rangataua it was a day to forget. A victory over Waikato's Melville would have left the series tied at two apiece, but after taking three points from an early penalty they were never in the hunt.
The Hamilton-based side were in a different class and took the match 54-3, giving the visitors a 3-1 win in the series and the Battle of the Kaimais trophy.
Conditions were just as challenging at Blake Park for the Baywide Pro 4 series.
Western Bay of Plenty were all over Central Bay taking their encounter 74-5, before Te Waiariki swept aside defending champs Bay of Plenty Pasifika 59-7.
This Saturday's matches in the Pro 4 comp should be more even as Te Waiariki and Western Bay meet in the early kickoff at 1 at Matata Rugby Club, followed by Pasifika meeting Central Bay at 2:45.
Battle of the Kaimais results:
Whakarewarewa 49, Southern United 5

Waikato take the Battle of the Kaimais 3-1
Baywide Pro 4 series results:
