November, 11 2018 is when the new Papamoa War Memorial will be revealed.
The day also known as Armistice Day, marks 100 years since the end of World War One.
'The memorial has been ordered. We've just got to do the concrete pad, the steps going up to it, and then there is going to be a little bit of landscaping and some of the local contractors are going to light it up at night,” says councillor Steve Morris.
'People are just coming out of the woodwork from everywhere to help and I'm just so heartened that as a community we still do that.
'The RSA are right behind it. They are 100 per cent behind it. A third of the members come from Papamoa and they are going to take over the ownership and maintenance of the memorial and will run services that are held there in the future.
'Papamoa iwi, Ngā Pōtiki are 100 per cent behind the memorial as well and has contributed some of the scripts for the memorial.
'There are three local Papamoa men who died during the wars, so their names will go on the memorial.
'In the two short months since we kicked off fundraising for Papamoa's own tribute to our nations fallen, we've already exceeded our target - without a single dollar from the ratepayer. Because of your generosity, the memorial has grown to 3m of black polished granite on a plinth donated by local concrete firm, Burrows Concrete.
'The memorial will now be of a scale befitting a community our size and a place for future generations to reflect on the sacrifices made so that we can live in peace and freedom.
'Many thanks to the crew of HMNZS Te Kaha, Barrett Homes, Pak N' Save Papamoa, The Blue bar & eatery, ZB Homes, Classic Builders, Papamoa Lions, Conder Marine, Legacy Trust, Elliotts Funeral services and members of the public.”
They still need additional funds for the landscaping for the new, larger, memorial so keep your donations coming to the Papamoa War Memorial account: 12-3407-0074451-00
