Protecting our native plants

A street stall is highlighting the importance of protecting native flora and fauna in the Bay of Plenty.

Forest and Bird Te Puke's annual street stall on Friday August 3, in the usual location outside the Post Office on Jellicoe Street, Te Puke.

Forest and Bird Te Puke member Carole Long says expert volunteers grow native tree seedlings for this stall and there will also be home baking available, and free advice.

'This is one of our main fundraising events and it has been going for at least 20 years,” says Carole.

'It's really just a time to get people together and fly our flag for the importance of Forest and Bird.”

'Come along and browse through what is on offer and meet our enthusiastic team, they are only too keen to share their knowledge and experience with you to help establish native trees, shrubs and ground cover in our gardens.”

Forest and Bird's Tauranga Branch has more than 700 members and covers the area from Te Puke to Waihi, bordering on the Waikato.

The Tauranga branch has a regular guided walks programme. On the first and third Thursday of each month, the group meets at 9.15 and are usually back by 3pm. Saturday walks meet at 8.15am on the second Saturday of each month.

These walks have an experienced leader who is able to share their knowledge of the local area and the wildlife observed along the way.

The annual street stall will be held on Friday, August 3 from 9am-12pm on Jellicoe Street, Te Puke.
