Concerns are mounting over a group of cattle which have wandered into the Waimapu estuary.

The cattle have been spotted and reported in the estuary from as early as Friday afternoon.

A caller to the 0800 SUNLIVE hotline says it appears they have wandered from somewhere near Windermere Park.

'They seem as though they are super disorientated. If they head in the wrong direction they are going to end up stuck in the mangroves and it will impossible to rescue them.

'The tide is currently on turn, and we're two hours into the tide coming in.”

He says he's contacted SPCA who have directed him to council, where he has had no response.

'In another hour they are going to be completely trapped.

'It's possible to get onto the mud flats and help them, there's an access way at Haukore St.”

He says there is the chance they may be able to put themselves out of danger.

"They look as if they are heading back in the same direction as they came, so hopefully they should be okay."

I can't believe that no-one who has been contacted has tried to assist.
