Nurses striking across the Bay of Plenty

Bay of Plenty nurses are taking are joining their colleagues from around New Zealand in strike action today.

In Whakatane, nurses are at the Landing Road bridge roundabout.

A reporter at the scene says there are a lot of people tooting in support.

The reporter says there is a "Pretty good vibe out here too".

In Rotorua, the nurses strike is reported to have got off to a reasonably smooth start.

Lakes DHB Incident Controller for emergency management at Lakes DHB, Gary Lees says actions that have been planned for over the past few months are now place.

He is warning that services may take a little longer, but care will still be provided, and patient safety is a priority.

They need to be paid more, what with rising food prices, these girls must be finding it tough just to get their fill.
