Calls for input on Omokoroa Domain plans

Omokoroa’s highly popular domain area is in line for a makeover.

A makeover is coming for Omokoroa's Domain and Esplanade, and Western Bay locals are invited to an open day to check out the initial plans and throw their ideas in the hat.

Western Bay of Plenty District Council say they are looking at upgrades which aim to find a balance between retaining the character of the domain and foreshore and making sure the area caters for growth and multiple uses.

They're inviting users to an open day on Saturday July 21 to have their say on the proposals.

The area's burgeoning population has spurred the council into action on the domain precinct.

'Omokoroa has been designated for growth for a number of years now,” says Scott Parker, Western Bay council's Reserves & Facilities Projects & Assets Manager.

'Another council project called the Omokoroa Structure Plan is looking at the next phase of Omokoroa's development at the moment, and we want to make sure the domain can cater for this growth and continue to be a great place and a real asset for the community.

'The Omokoroa community has recently developed their own plan which details their aspirations for the area's future, and includes this project.”

The development is still in the planning stages, says Scott.

'We're working with user groups to develop this draft proposal and this open day is a chance for the community to come and discuss the project with us and have their say.”

Looking at ways to increase parking, a shared-space link-road/pathway, upgrading the facilities and playgrounds and upgrading the boat ramp are among the ideas users have discussed.

'We've incorporated these as options into the concept plan,” Scott says.

The loss of any current amenities in the area is unlikely, Scott believes, but this will largely depend on the feedback the council gets from the public.

All domain users are welcome to have their say on the open day, not just Omokoroa residents, Scott says.

'We want members of the public who use the domain to come along and let us know what they think about the proposed concept design for how we can make it a more enjoyable place to be and better able to cope with having more users.”

Scott sees a four year overall timeline for the project, but locals should see some initial progress by the end of the year.

'The first stage is to get a community supported concept plan in place, which will be achieved in the next few months. After that, the detailed design can be started for the priority items.

'Priority will depend on the feedback received but Council hopes to achieve some quick wins before Christmas, which may be of a temporary nature initially, to help alleviate congestion issues during the busy holiday season.”

The open day is Saturday July 21, 10:30am to 1:30pm at the Omokoroa Boat Club.
