Fifty point thrashings in top of the table Farmlands Co-operative Baywide club rugby clashes don't come along every day, so Te Puke's effort at Tauranga Domain on Saturday is one that might live long in the memory in the Kiwifruit Capital.

It was fitting they turned out in their traditional gold jerseys as that was the colour almost everything they touched turned to in their ruthless 52-9 destruction of Tauranga Sports.

The home side went into the game backing the improved accuracy they'd shown in sticking to their game plan in their three straight prior wins, but will be back to the drawing board when they meet again for Tuesday night training.

A halftime scoreline of 28-9 told the story of Te Puke's dominance, and Tauranga's inability to keep ball in hand and produce anything of substance. The visitors' then found their opportunities to make healthy gains consistently in the contact areas and break through the backline defence at will continued unabated in the second spell.

The magnitude of the win will put the rest of the Premier 1 title contenders on notice. Te Puke move to 24 points, eight ahead of the chasing pack, and with matches against two of the competition's battlers, Rotoiti and Greerton Marist, to come hosting rights for the semifinal and final look all but locked down.

Tauranga Sports' first five John Dodd arrives too late to prevent Te Puke's Curtis Deane scoring.

Te Puna moved back into second ahead of Tauranga Sports with a hard-fought 18-14 home win over Mt Maunganui at Maramatanga Park. The defending champions have slipped to sixth and face an uphill battle to make the playoffs and keep alive their chances of retaining the title.

Whakarewarewa boosted their prospects of ensuring Rotorua representation in post-season action with a 35-33 defeat of Rangataua. They sit fourth on 15 points, level with Tauranga Sports but with a weaker points differential. The road to the playoffs is a rocky one though for the red-and-black outfit as they face heavyweights Te Puke and Tauranga in the next two weeks.

Greerton Marist made a point of their own on Saturday that they're not keen on the wooden spoon, and not counting themselves out of the semifinal race either, running out 55-30 victors over Rotoiti.

Defeats for previous frontrunners Ngongataha and Rangiuru have dramatically rearranged the Premier 2 standings.

Te Teko have put their noses ahead of a congested pack at the top of the table after edging Rangiuru 20-19, while Arataki are also upwardly mobile with a 19-13 defeat of Waikite.

Te Puke's Declan Barnett touches down.

Opotiki are firmly in the playoff mix after seeing off Ngongataha 27-22, while Whakatane Marist took out the wooden spoon battle with Marist St Michaels 32-26.

Rangataua continued their dominance of the Baywide women's competition defeating Matata 73-5 on Friday night. Rangiuru remain second after putting away Waimana in similarly dominant fashion, 50-7.

Whakarewarewa stay third despite having a bye, while Waikite took a 22-5 win over Rotoiti to solidify their fourth place.

The women's comp now takes a week's break before the first round of playoffs, which the top two teams Rangataua and Rangiuru sit out. The third to sixth placed teams meet in the quarterfinals on July 15 to decide who meet the top two in the following week's semifinals.
