Papamoa prolong that winning feeling

Papamoa recorded their fourth league win in a row with a 2-1 victory at Te Awamutu on Saturday.

On a dry but bitterly cold day in the Waikato, goals from captain Campbell Higgins and former All White Cole Peverley secured all three points for Duncan Lowry's side.

The club received a boost prior to kick-off with the news that striker Logan Crawford had made the short trip along State Highway 2 to sign from Tauranga City ahead of the transfer deadline.

And there was a place on the bench for the new boy in place of Strauss Boom, who missed out through injury alongside influential midfielder Fawwaz Ali.

A brisk start from the visitors, and a return to Lowry's favoured 3-4-3 formation, saw them take the lead when Higgins tapped the ball home amid a crowded penalty area.

The pacy front three of Mitchell Hales, Andrew Cooper and Dave Molloy caused the home side all kinds of problems, while defender Campbell Attwood asserted himself well on his first start for the club.

And it was 2-0 when Peverley's expertly-taken free-kick from distance was despatched into the top left corner of the net to give the Bay of Plenty side some breathing space.

The first-half performance mirrored much of what Papamoa preach on the training ground. With strong support down each flank and power through the middle thanks to the likes of Dean Styles, their easy-on-the-eye passing game threatened to overpower the hosts.

Despite the deficit, Te Awamutu approached the second-half determined to make their mark, and they were back in the game in the 67th minute when Jack Connor scored from the penalty spot.

Their search for an equaliser, however, was met by more resolute defending, and when debutant Logan Crawford emerged for the tiring Hales, his blistering pace and appetite to shoot ensured the points were heading back to the Bay.

After the game Lowry said: 'We have to be pleased with all three points. We had injury concerns all week as the season takes its toll, but our physio Hein Mollentze is working overtime.

'I'm sure it's the same situation at most clubs in the division. It's this time of the season that illustrates the importance of having an experienced physio on board.

And on new boy Crawford, Lowry added: 'I was delighted to sign Logan. I coached him earlier in his career and have always rated him highly.

'I didn't need to think twice about securing his skills and we're delighted he's become part of this exciting season that is unfolding for us all at the club.”

Papamoa return to Gordon Spratt Reserve on Saturday (July 7) for a home clash with Ross Johnson's improving Otumoetai (2.45pm kick-off).
