Two Mobil service stations were the target of thieves in the Waikato overnight.

But both attempted raids on the gas stations in Kopu and Hamilton were foiled, leaving the would-be burglars fleeing empty-handed.

Just before midnight four people smashed their way into the Mobil on the Ngati Maru highway near Thames, says Waikato police Senior Sergeant Pete Simpson.

Inside, fog cannons were deployed, befuddling the culprits who quickly fled with nothing.

They left in a silver Mazda station wagon, which was reported stolen from Thames, says Pete.

Police were reviewing footage of the incident and appealing for anyone who may have seen the vehicle in the area of State Highway 25 south of Thames on Tuesday evening.

A few hours later in Hamilton a man went to the Mobil service station on Avalon Dr armed with a hammer, says Pete

He used the weapon to smash the window, intending to demand items.

But the attendant working inside managed to deter the thief, who quickly fled empty-handed.

Pete says police dogs attempted to track the man but were unable to locate him.

He is described as a male Maori, about 176cm tall and around 18 years old. He was wearing a black hoodie with a red t-shirt underneath and a red bandanna.

He was last seen running on Avalon Dr.

If anyone has information on either of these incidents or witnessed anything suspicious, they're asked to call Hamilton police on 07 858 6200.

Information can also be left anonymously via Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
