The shortest way to back a good cause

From pasty to prickly, Tauranga residents are getting their legs out in the prime of winter and it's all for a good cause.

They're braving the cold to support one of the community's most vital services.

It's all in support of Shorts 4 Hospice, a fundraiser led by Waipuna Hospice which encourages locals to throw on a pair of their brightest, boldest, biggest, craziest shorts on the shortest day of the year, and help raise money at the same time.

As part of the fundraiser Waipuna Hospice has also included an additional incentive to be a part of the fun – encouraging Tauranga businesses to get involved, for a chance to win a morning tea.

Rothbury Associates Tauranga have been announced as the winners of the morning tea, which was presented to the team on Thursday afternoon.

Savouries, doughnuts and quiches were just some of the many delicious options on the menu – donated by Bakers of Bethlehem.

Advisor support Catherine Clarke says the fundraiser is always well-supported by the entire ANZ building on Cameron Rd, where their office is based.

'We all join in throughout the whole building, this is the third time we've taken part. It's such a great cause, Waipuna Hospice plays such an important role in the community.”

She says some interesting frocks have come out this year, with one team member donning the bottom half of a chicken suit.

'There's always some unique sights every year – and it's quite funny how people react when we're out in the hallway or a client comes in and they wonder why we're dressed this way, but people love it.

'The awareness of the campaign seems to grow every year.”

Director of Marketing and Fundraising, Sasima Pearce, says they are thankful not only to Rothbury Associates but to everyone who participated.

'It's been great to see everyone wearing their shorts loud and proud. Every year we are delighted by the outfits that are dreamt up by participants and we enjoy seeing the team-bonding and fun that takes place.

'Above all we are so grateful for all the money raised from this event. This will help ensure we can continue to provide the highest standard of palliative care services within our community.”
