A strong quake has hit Te Kaha in the Bay of Plenty, 200km north-east of Rotorua.
It had a preliminary magnitude of 4.7 and was 4km deep, GeoNet reported. The shallower depth was revised from an earlier report of 18km.
Within minutes of the quake hundreds of people had reported feeling it.
By 10.40pm, one person reported the shaking as severe, while 14 said it was strong and 99 described it as moderate.
