Encounter highlights Baywide Premier club rugby

Holding onto the ball, maintaining possession and cutting down on the error rate will be key for Te Puke Sports, as they aim for three out of three in Farmlands Co-operative Baywide Premier One club rugby in their home clash with Whakarewerewa tomorrow.

A 34-0 disposal of defending champions Mount Maunganui and last week's 29-12 defeat of Rangataua have given Te Puke a flying start to the championship round, leaving them second on the table, one point behind Te Puna.

Whakarewarewa are also unbeaten since the Premier competition split into two divisions, with wins over Greerton Marist and Rotoiti, and sit just a point behind his team in third, so Te Puke head coach Matt Wallis senses danger from the Rotorua outfit.

'Whakarewarewa are a threat all over the park. If we don't hold onto the ball up front or going wide they will expose us. They are a pretty handy team from one to fifteen across the park.”

Wallis is looking for sharper decision-making and greater urgency from his team tomorrow.

'The key improvement for us will be holding onto the ball, maintaining possession and not making mistakes like we did last week. Fifty-fifty passes and not keeping our depth when running onto the ball, killed us and we can't afford that this week.”

Defence and breakdown work have also been key focuses at training.

'We got exposed at the breakdown against Rangataua last week and need to show improvement in that area.”

A first round 27-25 win to Whakarewarewa back in April shows how little there is between the two sides, and should put revenge in the minds of the Western Bay outfit as they run onto Murray Salt Stadium.

Turning the tables will also be top of mind for Tauranga Sports as they travel to Maramatanga Park to take on high-flying Te Puna, though they have a somewhat wider gap to close.

Te Puna took out the clash between the teams 40-12 in April on their unbeaten first round travels, and have maintained their free-scoring form in the championship round with wins over Rangataua and Greerton Marist, scoring 105 points and conceding just 43 in the process.

A loss to Rotoiti and win over the Mount have highlighted Tauranga's patchy form this season, leaving them fifth on the table.

They will be looking to move up a level to upset the championship favourites and calm their nerves over making a top four playoff spot.

Getting their seasons back on track will also be top priority for Greerton Marist and Rangataua when they meet at Greerton Park.

Sitting well outside the top four with just a point each on the table both sides face shaky prospects of reaching the playoffs if they lose.

The team causing most head-scratching this season though is Mt Maunganui Sports.

The defending champs have conceded 73 points in their two second round losses, and sit plumb last without even a bonus point to their name.

Registering their first win will be no easy task either as they travel to Rotorua to take on a business-like Rotoiti outfit at Emery Park.

All matches kick off at 2.45pm.
