Modern circus defying gravity

Ride the wind with ‘Air Play', a modern circus spectacle that brings life to the air we breathe.

Prepare for flying umbrellas, larger-than-life balloons and giant kites to float over your head, while the biggest snow globe you've ever seen will make you gasp in wonder and laugh till it hurts.

Direct from New York and strictly for a limited season, Baycourt Presents in association with the Tauranga Arts Festival is proudly bringing this all-ages theatrical extravaganza to Baycourt Community and Arts Centre Addison Theatre on Tuesday and Wednesday, October 9-10.

Described as a visual poem, ‘Air Play' is a fun feast for the eyes that transcends cultures and leaps over borders, and has delighted audiences everywhere from Chile to China, Portugal to the Netherlands since its world premiere in 2015.

'Enchanting, enthralling, exciting; perfect for the young and the young at heart; an award winning show that's a must-see for everyone wanting something new and different – all of these descriptions perfectly describes Air Play and yet it still doesn't do the show justice,” says Baycourt manager Megan Peacock Coyle.

'It is one of those shows that works on so many different levels, but one thing is for sure: it's spectacular and really is something for the whole family to enjoy, which is one of the reasons why Baycourt, in association with Tauranga Arts Festival, is extremely proud to be bringing Air Play to Tauranga.”

Tauranga Arts Festival Director Jo Bond has been lucky enough to watch Air Play on stage in London recently and says she was utterly 'blown away - excuse the pun” by what she saw.

'Air Play is such a wonderful and wondrous show. I am so thrilled that our Tauranga audiences now have an opportunity to see this amazing visual feast,” says Jo.

‘Air Play' is described as ‘a totally enchanting encounter for kids, and the perfect reset for world-weary adults'. It's a hybrid of entertainment styles: part comedy, sculpture, circus, and theatre.

Two siblings journey into the unknown. Making the ordinary extraordinary, they transform domestic objects into images of unparalleled beauty. Expect balloons to have a mind of their own, confetti to turn into the night sky, and a gigantic canopy of silk to envelop you.

Husband and wife team Seth Bloom and Christina Gelsone merge their unique circus and street theatre skills in ‘Air Play' with the sculptural artistry of collaborator Daniel Wurtzel.

First meeting at a circus in Afghanistan, Seth and Christina became engaged whilst performing in Scotland, and married in China. They've created five shows, juggled on The Late Show with David Letterman, headlined at the Big Apple Circus and performed in over 23 countries together.

Brooklyn-based kinetic sculptor Daniel Wurtzel has carved a significant career internationally, creating work with Cirque du Soleil, Julie Taymor, Robert Lepage and for the Sochi Winter Olympics.

‘Air Play' is part of a four-city New Zealand tour playing Dunedin, New Plymouth, Tauranga and Auckland from September 28 to October 14.
