A Thames family and a Bay of Plenty family have lost everything after a fire tore through their homes overnight.

Firefighters were called to the blaze on Mount Sea Road around 3pm on Tuesday.

The two storey dwelling was completely 'alight” when crews arrived at the scene.

Thames Chief Fire Officer Greg Rendall confirmed the house was unoccupied at the time of the fire.

Northern fire communications shift manager Craig Dally says the property is 'pretty badly damaged so it's going to take a while to figure [the cause] out”.

Police and a fire safety investigator were called to the scene yesterday.

Later that evening, Rotorua crews were called to a house fire in Rimu Street, Glenholme.

The call went out around 5.30pm, says fire northern communications shift manager Paul Radden.

That home was also well ablaze by the time firefighters arrived, and Radden did not have any information on what caused the fire.
