Solar power alternative option

On a recent rail trip through southern England I noted that many of the towns had fields of solar panels on their outskirts. I mentioned this to my daughter, a teacher in south London, and was told that her school had panels on all the classrooms and that during the seven-week summer break they gained enough credits to pay for winter heating of the school.

New Zealand, the Shaky Isle, has basically one form of electricity generation – hydro. There are some windmills north of Palmerston North and the majority of hydro plants are 50 years old. Our Ruahihi station is 39 years old and nothing lasts for ever. I have no knowledge on the various plants around the country but would suggest that we need an alternative should a quake hit the wrong spot. TECT- funded panels for the hospital perhaps?
