Sacrificial act understood

As an immigrant to NZ (here 20 years, and a citizen), I've not understood the importance of Anzac Day. I didn't ‘get it' until I read your article on Pvt J L Hartland (page 24, The Weekend Sun, April 20) who died 100 years ago, "A man who gave his life for our freedoms".

I understood it then – from a Christian point of view that's just what Jesus did for us all.

I can see now why people place such importance on this sacrificial act – when a life is given for you, it deserves thought and respect.

"Greater love has no one than this, than to lay down one's life for his friends." (The Bible, John 15, verse 13).
