Waikite water okay after main break

Contractors are working to repair a ‘significant' water main break in Waikite Road earlier today that resulted in a stream of water flowing down the road, blocking the uphill lane.

Welcome Bay residents were directing traffic around the roadside stream during the morning peak.

There is no disruption to anyone's water supply, says city council communications advisor Rachel Schicker.

'Our contractors are assessing how long the repairs are likely to take,” says Rachel.

Stop Go traffic management was in place Thursday morning.

'There's been significant damage to the road so the access will be down to one lane at times as we work on the repairs.”

Large volumes of water flowed downhill from the site of the break outside no 78 near the reservoir, to Galaxy Place, scouring under the road surface and making the vehicle crossings unsafe outside 69 and 67.

A resident told SunLive she saw water flowing down the gutter yesterday and noticed it because there has been no recent rain.

'We've spoken to the residents whose driveways have been affected and we're working to restore their access as soon as possible,” says Rachel.

Contractors are still assessing the damage but repairs are expected to take at least a few days.

Drivers are asked to take care when driving through the area.

Waikite Road break in water supply

The Council should also be looking at the bottom of Waikite Road where it meets Welcome Bay road as there is also a major leak from a water main cover in the middle of the road and scouring out under the bitumen - Council have been informed over 6 weeks ago but nothing done yet - wonder if something will be done when road collapses further????
