Bella Vista: owners to meet investigator

Residents of the failed Bella Vista Homes hope the investigator will be truly independent. TOM LEE/STUFF

Homeowners left in limbo by the failed Bella Vista Homes development will tonight meet with an independent investigator looking into possible Tauranga City Council failure.

QC Paul Heath was appointed by council to investigate their role in the handling of the failing development which saw 21 homes evacuated and many deemed dangerous despite having passed council inspections.

Some homes have trouble with their foundations as well as structural defects causing homeowners to wonder how they were signed off in the first instance.

The meeting will be the first time homeowners have been able to make contact with Heath since he was appointed.

Affected home owner Degan Prodger says the meeting feels like "just another council meeting" and homeowners are feeling sidelined.

"At first we thought this would be our chance to meet with the investigator alone but now we hear all the councillors are going to be there.

"It doesn't feel independent but I hope that feeling will change after the meeting."

Heath's report is due before June 6 when councillors will make a decision as to how to remedy the situation.

Options include buying out the affected properties or undertaking remedial works.

Heath says the public meeting is for owners from the Bella Vista Home Development, as well as other parties directly associated with the development. This includes subcontractors and builders.

"I want them to provide their feedback in an open and transparent manner," he says.

"I will take their views into account when preparing my report."

This is a 'public meeting'

This is a 'PUBLIC MEETING' at 7pm tonight, Tuesday 8 May 2018. The venue is the ASB Arena at Baypark, 2nd floor meeting room. For those who cannot attend but take an interest the meeting is to be 'live streamed'. It is a shame Sunlive hasn't all of the info to share as this is of critical community interest with property owners lives destroyed and the potential to cost ratepayers $15 - 20 million.

If I were a Bella Vista victim, the first question I would ask Mr. Heath is When can we meet you privately without all these politicians who are only there to protect their own backsides?

Shocking..

I really feel for these Families. What a mess.. The council should just own up to their incompetence & mistakes here & pay these families compensation & fix the problem instead of dancing around it trying to cover up their mistakes,, too money hungry handing out building consents just because... did the "Experts" (I use that world very loosely in this matter!) even look at the sections & test them, before they allowed builders to build on them?Do the right thing council & save these families from more suffering & costs & waiting... people might actually respect the council then.... Independent QC Heath was appointed by the Council?? Independent?? Best of luck to these Affected Families in the future.

What is the Mayor's stance on this?

The Mayor has been very quiet on this matter. I feel he should have fronted up to the Public. I truly hope this is an unbiased investigation, seeing that the Council will be paying for it.

Wrong

It is naive to say 'The council will be paying for it" The council has no way of paying for anything unless the ratepayers give them the money. The bottom line of this sad affair comes down to one word (and that is being kind) and that word is 'incompetence' Those employees that have secured jobs as inspectors based upon their CVs which should support their qualifications should now be publicly on the mat (after all the public is employing them) and they should have to show why the decisions they have made should be accepted by the public otherwise litigation against them should proceed - why the hell should innocent people suffer because of the total incompetence of others?

Shameful

TCC should hang their head in shame. How did this ever get to this point? They have managed to estrange themselves from these citizens. Whose next?

Independent?

How can Mr Heath be "Independent" if his pay cheque comes from the organization that is trying to cover there ass? Bet he is only being shown the stuff the council want him to see!

Questionable Councillors Ethics

Posted on 08-05-2018 14:31 | By Intrepid

Councillors are ethically not entitled to attend. They have a vested interest in the outcome as defined in the role. They serve no purpose to the meetings involved during the investigation. Councillors and Council Inspectors should be only invited to a public meeting where the outcome of the report is tabled.
