A lawyer linked to New Zealand's first convicted human trafficker has been found guilty of fraud.

Mohammed Idris Hanif was convicted for offences relating to knowingly providing false and misleading information to Immigration New Zealand.

Hanif had provided legal service to convicted human trafficker Faroz Ali in 2014.

Ali was found guilty in 2016 - the first conviction for human trafficking in New Zealand.

INZ says that Hanif provided false and misleading information to it on visitor visa applications submitted on behalf of Fijians who were trafficked into New Zealand by Ali.

Evidence presented in a four-day trial at the Manukau District Court proved Hanif knew that the actual reason for the Fijian victims to remain in New Zealand was to work for Ali, says INZ.

INZ says Hanif submitted on five separate occasions visa applications including the false and misleading information.

The applications said the Fijian workers were genuine tourists and wanted to stay in New Zealand longer to sightsee and visit family and friends.

"In reality, Hanif fraudulently assisted the Fijian victims to apply for visitor visas so they could remain working for Faroz Ali's business."

Hanif admitted to assisting with visa applications when questioned by immigration investigators but said he was unaware it was for them to continue working for Ali.

INZ assistant general manager Peter Devoy says Hanif's involvement was solely to commit fraud.

"We will not tolerate people committing immigration fraud and today's outcome reflects this,."

Hanif will be sentenced on August 3 at Manukau District Court.

The Fijian workers have since returned home.
