Papamoa go goal crazy on opening day

A new-look Papamoa FC signalled their intent in blistering fashion on the opening day of their Loaded WaiBOP Premiership campaign, with a 10-0 win at Hamilton Wanderers.

The recently-appointed management team of Duncan Lowry, Gary Darkes and Andy Birchenough made a dream start to life at a club that lost all 22 of their league fixtures last season.

In stark contrast to last year's woes, Papamoa flew out of the blocks at Porritt Stadium in the Waikato, and stamped their authority on the fixture with a dominant attacking display.

Lining up in a 3-4-3 formation, the visitors included 13 new faces in their squad, with Alex Wilson the lone survivor from 2017's side.

Andrew Cooper led the charge with four goals and could easily have doubled his tally, while Strauss Boom and Mitch Hales chipped in with a brace each.

Cruize Herrera also got on the scoresheet and Dave Malloy capped a fine performance with a delightful chip.

Manager Lowry was understandably delighted with the outcome of his first competitive fixture in charge, with the only concern a hamstring injury to captain Issac Bright, who limped off shortly before half-time.

'It's a very satisfying start to the new campaign,” says the Northern Irishman.

'We were very balanced and kept our shape throughout.

'It was disciplined from us for the whole 90 minutes, though Hamilton Wanderers are a much better side than the final score suggests.

'For the first three-quarters of the game it was sustained attacking before some controlled possession in the last quarter.”

Next up for Papamoa is a home fixture against Te Awamutu at Gordon Spratt Reserve on Saturday, April 14 (2.45pm kick-off)

'It was good to see a decent contingent of travelling supporters make the trip over the Kaimais,” says Lowry, 'and we hope to see a lot more turn up on Saturday.”
