100 climbs of the Papamoa Hills

It's not uncommon for people, still in the throes of an alcohol-induced fugue of the night before, to make rash promises on New Year's Day.

Resolutions to lose weight, exercise more, or eat better, often last no more than a few days.

But for a couple of Papamoa women, a resolution to climb the Papamoa Hills 100 times in 100 days is about to be achieved.

Kym Wong-Sang and Bridget Chugg set themselves the challenge after Bridget came through a battle with breast cancer.

'It was just over a year since she had recovered, and we were looking at ways to get back into exercise,” says Kym. 'It's been fun, but also a bit of hard work.”

Kym says the walk is ‘on par' with climbing Mount Maunganui – which isn't an exaggeration, as Mauao is only eight metres taller than the highest point of the hills.

'Instead of being short and sharp it's longer,” she says. 'We started out walking it at a normal pace, but now we're doing 16 minutes up and 10 minutes down.”

The pair are feeling fit after 90-plus walks, and on Saturday April 7 they'll make their 100th climb, this time with a group of supporters to help them celebrate.

Apart from gaining a newfound fitness, Kym says one of the most rewarding things is surveying the Bay when you reach the peak.

'Every time you're at the top, the view is amazing. You never get sick of it, whatever the weather.”

Entry to the Papamoa Hills is at the end of Poplar Lane off State Highway 2 between Papamoa and Te Puke. More information about the different walking trails can be found on a display board at the Poplar Lane carpark.
