Only the fittest survive

As a former believer in the theory of evolution I read A McLeod's letter (The Weekend Sun, March 9) with interest. Evolution does not pertain to the origin of species. About the start of life it tells us nothing. For natural selection to work it has to select from something. For the fittest to survive there must be some who are fitter than others, and they must first be alive.

Fortunately A McLeod does not really believe in evolution either. If he did then there would be no point writing a letter to the Sun about it. There is no point to life if it is all pre-determined chemical processes, and debating the point is illogical.

Furthermore, the only morality that can derive from the theory is the ‘you will do as I say, or else' system. Arguing that all animals are equal contradicts the basic tenet of the theory. It is only the fittest that survive, not the worthy.

The greatest evils of the previous century – communism and Nazism – are both children of this theory. The better way is to love God, and your neighbour as yourself.

We can be good without God

Evolution isn't just some belief equal with faith in ancient creation myths because Evolution is supported by scientific evidence. Evolution tells us nothing about abiogenesis, however science has made good progress into origins - see the TalkOrigins Archive. All life can be treated equally, with respect by humanity, and that does not logically contradict Evolution nor my ability to protect myself and my species. Evolution does not indicate pre-determined chemical processes. We dont derive morality from this theory. Communism and Nazism were NOT children of that theory. Google: The Atheist Atrocities Fallacy Hitler, Stalin & Pol Pot. We can be moral without any gods. The golden rule pre-dates the Bible. Finally, you suggest a better way but you have yet to provide credible evidence for any gods.
