Boat ramps still closed

Tauranga's boat ramps remain closed today with their future opening uncertain.

Tauranga City Council staff closed the four and six lane ramps on Sulphur Point on Friday afternoon citing the amount of oil on the water.

Marine Park is usually busy with boaties. Instead, it is closed at this time.

Later in the afternoon, Maritime New Zealand requested that all the city boat ramps be closed says Tauranga City Council communications Marcel Currin.

Council staff are examining the ramps today.

'Then they have to liaise with Maritime New Zealand then they will make a decision. That's all I know at the moment.”

Mayor Stuart Crosby says he is looking into regaining ramp access for commercial operators.

'The boat ramps were closed to reduce mainly recreational people heading out into the ocean and bringing oil back.

'It's probably a day-by-day issue now with the slick heading mainly eastwards.”
