Earthquake felt in Western Bay

A 3.4 magnitude earthquake was felt throughout the Western Bay last night.

Western Bay of Plenty residents are reporting feeling the ground shaking following an earthquake overnight.

Several SunLive readers have emailed in saying the quake at 9.50pm gave their house quite a shake.

According to GeoNet, there was a 3.4 magnitude earthquake 35km south-west of Tauranga.

While the shaking is being described as “weak” by GeoNet, the shallowness of it could be why a lot of people felt it – it had a focal depth of 10km.

Did anyone else feel the quake?

We’re in Tauranga and felt a short shake at approx. 9.55pm last night. Wasn’t sure if it was a quake at the time as it was so quick. Past quakes we’ve experienced have been more rolling and longer in duration.
