Memories and possessions lost

A Tauranga couple are frustrated and angry with the lack of co-operation of from the shipping company in charge of the stricken cargo ship Rena.

Craig Fellows moved to Tauranga on September 14, with his wife and two children.

Craig Fellows just wants some answer about where his stuff maybe.

They packed everything they owned and put it in a container which is now either on the stranded Rena or lost somewhere at sea.

Craig says when he first heard the news of the ship he says he felt inconvenienced.

'It was more of an inconvenience, because you think they will pull it off in the next few days or there will just be a delay.

'But a couple of hours a later, the realisation actually hit that no it was probably worse than that. Our whole life is on that container.”
Craig says they left Australia to return home with only a couple of suitcases.

'Everything else on the ship. Wedding photos and negatives. The videos and the photos of the children's first Christmas, first steps and things they had made for mothers, are all gone. Things we can never get back.”

Craig says he has insurance but he's unsure when he will get paid out as they don't know if their stuff is lost to sea on still on the ship.

'We have had no contact from the shipping company but the removal company have been good. They have been in contact with us, but they haven't been able to get any information from the shipping company.

'I would be willing to sign a confidentiality agreement just to know some information about where my stuff is.”

He says he doubts whether he will ever know the exact location of his container as he is just one of many people who have lost precious cargo.

'I'm just one container on the boat. I'm not going to do this again; I'm just nothing to them.”

'It's just frustrating and I just want to know what is going to happen to our lives. It's hard to explain to a five-year-old that their things are gone. It's hard to accept as an adult.

'You can't replace memories.”
