UPDATED 3:40pm: Police have been called in to investigate a suspicous fire near Bayfair this afternoon.

Firefighters were called to a garage fire at Carysfort St just before 3pm.

The fire has since been extinguished firefighters using a high pressure delivery system.

Fire and Emergency NZ northern communications centre shift manager Paul Radden says no one was trapped in the fire.

A police spokesperson says they were called to the scene because the fire may be suspicious.

Reports are coming in of a shed fire near the Bayfair Shopping Centre.

The fire is understood to be at a property on Carysfort Street.

A caller to the 0800 SUNLIVE news hotline believed everyeone was out of the house.

Firefighters have been called to the scene.
