Western Bay foibles

Western Bay District Council hierarchy wanted to censure Norm Mayo, a Katikati Community Board member, to bring him into line because he used his initiative, voicing constructive observations on Katikati matters that didn't align with the Mayor and his cohorts' mindsets.

The January 31 meeting of the Katikati Community Board was the largest ever, with the Mayor, councillors and Norm Mayo supporters all present for the censure issue.

Whatever happened to freedom of speech in New Zealand? Why do we have so many upstarts in charge when councillors/community boards are supposed to gather information, consult, and then come up with the best economic solution? That doesn't happen anymore!

WBDC rifts emerge and with 4000-plus signatures on the petition demanding a referendum opposing Maori Wards, maybe the Mayor is under pressure.

Mr Webber forgets WBDC ratepayers foot the bill and they could vote him out at the drop of a hat if he continues on his merry way without public consultation.

Ratepayers are not so naïve to think race-based Maori Wards will cost nothing, because any change always costs and ratepayers pay the piper!

Elected members need to start listening to and consulting with WBDC ratepayers before making major decisions with less of the ‘bully boy' tactics otherwise democracy will deal to you.

The action against Mr.Norm Mayo is par for the the course for this outfit. The community board is loaded with council appointments to ensure council will is enforced. Any member speaking out contrary to council agenda, is quickly shut down.At some council meetings I have personally witnessed councilors refused permission to speak. Is this the democratic process we expect? I for one don't think so.

Shame on you Gary!

"Christine you are so right" The harsh treatment and humiliation Norm Mayo has suffered is wrong. Here is a man who has tirelessly given a good part of his life to the Community to make it a better place to live. Those involved should have their "thingy's squeezed" In the rest of NZ we live in a Democracy, not so in Western BOP. "The man should be Knighted"

This is par for the course with this outfit. Mr. Mayo has always acted with the best interests of ratepayers in reducing the ever increasing rate burden, especially for those on fixed incomes.Rates and other charges will have katikati ratepayers, forking out $100.00 per week to pay for their grandiose ideas.Community boards have council appointees to maintain a majority to support this massive spend-up.Even re-appointing ones who were voted off at the last elections.Shutting down opposing views is not the democratic system we expect.
