On a slippery step

Prior to installing the tidal steps on the CBD waterfront, numerous ratepayers and other interested parties raised concerns regarding the health and safety of this project, because of the effect slime and other marine factors would have.

All those involved in this venture, TCC staff, councillors and the consultants must have been aware of the consequences tidal waters would have on these steps over time.

Currently, these steps are checked daily, swept if necessary, water-blasted twice a week, slip-proof mats have been installed as a trial, further options are under investigation before adding more mats - just where will this saga end?

More consultants will be needed to undertake these further investigations. As long as these steps remain in their current form, the ratepayers will have to bear the cost for the ongoing monitoring and maintaining of these steps, to be fit for their intended purpose.

It would be an interesting exercise to see what the proposed annual budget was to service the steps, as compared to the actual costs we have to incur now. Cost for the likes of consultants and the daily check of the steps needs to be included.

Will be more than the build, that regardless was horrific. Sadly the views of many external to TCC and so not on the payroll of TCC were considerably closer to the facts of it than any internal t6ype on the payroll and who dare not complain or object in anyway to the reality of it. I guess that TCC will be chlorinating the harhour next to eliminate all the sea life and slime effects so as to ensure the stairs are clean for a Dey, but they will rapidly decay back to normal: slime, muck, litter and sewerage a-plenty. This is the wonders to behold for tourist to Tauranga!
