Tauranga City Council staff begin their move from the former Trustbank building on Devonport Road to the newish IRD building on Cameron Road on Friday.

The move, which will happen over three weeks, will see about 400 people changing offices from one temporary location to another.

The original move to Devonport Road was forced by the discovery of toxic mould in the former council administration building Willow Street, in December 2014.

The building has since been demolished.

The move will involve around 400 people moving to the office building at 306 Cameron Road for the next few years. The move will happen progressively over three weeks.

The main driver behind the move is to support a major redevelopment of the site at 2 Devonport Road.

'Council is committed to supporting initiatives that will contribute to creating a vibrant, safe and successful city centre,” says Council Chief Executive Garry Poole.

'We agreed to end our lease of Devonport Road early to make way for this exciting new development.

"New developments will bring more people and high-value businesses to the city centre, helping to achieve council's aspiration to become an internationally competitive city, creating a higher standard of living for all."

Main public services and Council Chambers will remain at Willow Street, and staff will continue to work between our Willow Street, Spring Street and Cameron Road offices.

As part of the relocation planning, council staff have been developing a travel plan to encourage all staff to consider alternative means of transport to work. Transportation manager Martin Parkes says the plan encourages people to cycle, motorbike, car pool, use public transport, or walk/run if possible.

'We're a large organisation and we need to lead the way in our individual travel habits,” says Martin.

'Every person on a bike, e-bike, or bus represents a tangible savings in car parks and it helps relieve the traffic flow.”

Tauranga City Council has around 40 - 60 staff who regularly bike to work, a number that will likely increase after 52 staff recently bought themselves ebikes.

The use of 306 Cameron Road is temporary until the planned new council offices are constructed in Willow Street. The new building is intended to house all CBD-based council staff from 2020-21.

I was shocked to read just how many staff the TCC employ, what do they all do?

Let them stay on at the IRD. Lets not build a new TCC building. Imagine the savings and extra parking about the place.

It shows the truth of the matter..The council does not need an edifice in the center of the so called CBD. If they can operate from 3rd Avenue y=the can operate from TeMaunga. With a satellite office in the middle of town as it has now...Although I am sure many people would be happier finding parking and less stressed about the effort if even the public front desk was further away from the messy one way roads and nasty cobbled streets , bus stops, parking meters and all the rest of the hassle needed to actually go to the council offices...or perhaps that is what council staff want?
