Second officer to appear in court

The second officer in charge of the navigation watch of the cargo ship Rena has been charged and will appear in the Tauranga District Court today.

The man is facing one count of operating a vessel in a manner causing unnecessary danger or risk.

The charge has been laid by Maritime New Zealand under section 65 of the Maritime Transport Act.

The ship's Master appeared in court on Wednesday charged with the same offence.

He's been granted interim name suppression and will appear in court again on October 19, as further charges may be laid.
