Navigation warning

A warning about floating containers has been issued to ships arriving and departing from the Port of Tauranga, New Zealand's busiest port.

An estimated 70, mostly 40ft containers are missing from the stack on board the ship Rena, aground on the Astrolabe Reef – as photos taken this morning show.

The Port of Tauranga's normal operations are not affected, a spokesman advises this morning.

Ships entering the port have been advised to stand well clear of the area around the wreck.

Heavy weather overnight is believed to be bringing the containers inshore. At least one shipping container was today seen afloat near Motiti Island.

I went down to Papamoa Beach this morning at high tide and was horrified to see 60-70% (in my not so expert opinion) of the sand (granted it was high tide) covered in oil. I so wish I had taken a camera down. I cannot seem to find any pictures of the devastation on line.
