An 18-year-old man sustained serious injuries and had to be cut from his vehicle.

The Tauranga-based Trustpower TECT Rescue Helicopter was dispatched Tatuanui, near Morrinsville, on Thursday.

The teenager was the sole occupant of the vehicle that ended up in a ditch on the side of the road after the driver lost control on a sharp bend, says a spokesperson for the rescue helicopter.

'The driver had to be cut out of the car by the NZ Fire Service and stabilised by St John paramedics at the scene before being flown to Waikato Hospital with multiple serious injuries.

'The helicopter was called to the scene at 5.30pm.”
